BSK was recently featured on VH1 Soul's "Soul Cities", and TV-One's "G. Garvin: The Road Tour". Click the above links in our "Media" section to see the video! Watch for us on 'Check, Please! Bay Area' this spring on KQED!
The cuisine at Brown Sugar Kitchen reflects my interpretation of soul food. My influences include my African-American heritage, my formal training at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in France, and my general appreciation of a wide variety of cuisines. If you want to dig deeper without actually coming down here, check out my book, New Soul Cooking (Stewart, Tabori, and Chang) or tanyaholland.com.
We cook with locally grown, organic and seasonal ingredients whenever possible.
Our thoughtful wine list is international and eclectic. We also feature wines from California African-American Vintners as well as wines from the South of France, where I completed my first stagiere position. Look for a few of your favorite microbrews on tap.
We are located at the center of the bay area in Oakland’s oldest neighborhood. I encourage everyone to come out and discover the incredible diversity and history of sweet west Oakland.
The term “soul food” emerged at the same time as soul music; so naturally, music is a significant part of the experience at BSK. We hope our playlist will both surprise you and inspire you.
